The name Xantheus belongs to a noble family whose namesake was almost entirely built by Dario Xantheus, Ramza's great grandfather. Dario was a Red Wizard who excelled in his understanding of the school of Conjuration, yet was more renown for his establishing a greatly successful business in trading rare, exotic slaves - drow, in particular - during the moment of chaos created by The Tear of the Broken Blade, where Halacar of Algarond launched his invasion of Thay. Dario's legacy and business was passed down to two generations of relatively unsuccessful wizards, however very clever and successful business men, until Ramza was born, their contrary.

Ramza was born a promising, patriotic prodigy in the Thayan metropolis of Eltabbar, caring only for the wonders of the arcane, transmutation in particular, and the boons they could provide for him and the nation of Thay. The ability to observe and take the properties of any tangible object, organic or otherwise, and alter them far beyond its natural capabilities presented itself as a solution to everything, to the idealistic Ramza; famine, disease, mortality - everything could be cured, shortcomings of nature be improved and perfected, and lacking supplies compensated with by this school, removing any weakness the nation of Thay, or humanity, might have when subjected to nature. It was these beliefs coupled with Ramza's skill that placed him in a prestigious school that he retained high placement in.

Ramza's father, Ibrahim, took his son's success as a wizard in distaste, almost sure that he would eventually achieve the status of a Red Wizard, which threatened his business he was not yet ready to give up, despite Ramza caring little for it. For this, Ibrahim schemed a plot against his son that capitalized on an old, outdated law forbidding anyone who is not a Red Wizard from possessing a map of Eltabbar, by planting a map on his son and paying a family spy to report his possession to a Red Wizard.

The repercussions were not grave, though Ramza will never speak of them, and when finding out his father was the one responsible, Ramza chose to leave Eltabbar, seeing his father's greed and schemes as persistent nuisances that would continue to hinder his studies - something Ramza would not tolerate, yet his equal status and fewer coins prevented him from changing it any other way.

Ramza chose a small, desolate place far enough away from Thay to be out of his father's reach, yet where he might also continue his studies with Thayan resources. Ramza chose Sundren.
