Background:
What little is known of Phaedriel, has only come to light from her time spent in Sundren. She is the mother of Alyrian Eldeas, the warlock who first made the dark pact that bound her family line to eldritch power. Shortly after giving birth to Alyrian, she was slain - she later revealed that Alyrian's conception and birth were all planned; his existence was merely to serve as Phaedriel's puppet and vessel.
Recent History:
She occupied Alyrian's body, at first consensually, and they shared an interesting, if not completely unified purpose. Her soul was forcibly removed from her son's body by the Demon Tarriah, but she found her way back. Her second appearance has been much less accomodating to her son, who has essentially become trapped within his own body, no longer able to assert his own presence. She completely wrested all control of Alyrian's body away, days before the siege against the Necrpolis, and used the attack as an opportunity to test her renewed power.
Though she would lay claim to being all-powerful, she has displayed a surprising amount of caution concerning the Tormite paladin, Hano Fetten. His procurement of the holy sword and its power to sever a demon-possessed body from its captor represents an unprecedented threat to her continued existence within her son's physical form; though to her knowledge the sword has not been raised against any devils, she is not willing to be the first to test its abilities.
The Lady Tamryn Jorandur's subtle ability to bolster Alyrian's will and resistance against his mother is also great cause for Phaedriel's concern. In an effort to eliminate this threat, she lured Tamryn to the Viridale to ambush and slay her. The attack failed; though she prepared deadly magicks, Alyrian refused to allow his mother to bring them down to bear against Tamryn, and Phaedriel was forced to retreat.
Desperate to consolidate her power and reeling from a devastating defeat at the hands of Tamryn, Phaedriel accepted Tifton's offer of transferring into a new host body. Though the ritual was a success and her spirit abandoned her son's form, she was brutally slain shortly after when she attacked the group harboring her son - Tifton's vengeance was so quick, her expression was still frozen in contempt for her son's saviors. With her death, Alyrian is now finally free.
Personality:
Her mortal life was one of vanity, pride, and unadulterated depravity, and her return to the physical plane has been no less so. She is manipulative, having twisted truth and falsehood to her benefit in convincing Alyrian of her motherly affection, when in fact her only intention for Alyrian was as a spare body. Prone to flights of fancy, fits of unabashed jealousy, and terrible wrath, she is unpredictable and dangerous. To those who curry her favor or hold her affection, however, she can be seen to be very protective.
Powers and Abilities:
Phaedriel has displayed the following supernatural and diabolic powers.
- The ability to regenerate and recover from otherwise-mortal wounds.
- Searing blasts of eldritch energy, often imbued with fire and hexes.
- Conjuring supernatural plagues and locusts to swarm her enemies.
- Blanketing wide areas in impenetrable darkness.
- Walking unseen even against the sharpest of normal vision.
- Bewitching and seductive charms.
- Short-range teleportation.
- Breaking down and consuming the components of spells to empower her own health.
- Assuming the hellish form of a Cormugon.
Significant Relationships:
- Alyrian Eldeas - As Alyrian's mother, she seems to at least show some superficial sense of fondness for him. However, her occupation inside Alyrian's body has not been a harmonious one, and she has on several occasions, wrested control away from Alyrian to please her own will. Her most recent emergence seems to indicate that her power has grown - Alyrian is harder and harder-pressed to contain her personality.
- Tarriah - The demon that severed Phaedriel from Alyrian's body during her first emergence. Though the damage done was not permanent, to Phaedriel, the act was a humiliating blow, an insult to her power and magic. Her desire to prove her power, coupled with her thirst for vengeance to any who would try to emasculate her again, was the driving force behind her desire to defeat Landaren.
- Hano Fetten - Though Phaedriel initially regarded Hano as little more than an annoyance, his recent acquisition of the Baneslayer holy sword, coupled with his clear an unflinching defiance of her power, has forced the she-devil to reconsider. Having underestimated him once, she has no intention of doing so again, and will stop at nothing to see both him and his sword destroyed.
Factions:
Though she joined the invading forces against the Necropolis and was the one who "defeated" Neradnal in single combat, she holds no allegiances but to herself. Just before her death, however, she confirmed that she had been in negotiations for an alliance with the Ill'Koresh.
Trivia:
