Summary:
Qybox was born into an important family in a large, rural hin community called Mirebrooke. His father, Jestin, was the town magistrate, an avid politician and wealthy by hin standards. This drive for power, unusual to hins, carried through the bloodline to Qybox as well.

Qybox had a younger brother, Bittlebale, who was deemed to be his father's successor from an early age. Bittlebale was tall, well-built, handsome, and charming. He had all the makings for a leader, save for sympathy. He had little heart for anyone but his own.

Of the two sibblings, Qybox was vastly more intelligent and always felt he should be his father's successor. But Qybox was born with a deformity in his left-hand fingers. He also lacked the charm and charisma of his brother. And, most importantly, he fought constantly with their father on family matters. Jestin passed Qybox over, despite being born first, and left Qybox to his own desires.

Bittlebale met his end as he was nearing adulthood. Following his father's wishes, he had joined the local militia to prepare him for a role in town leadership. Unfortunately, he was slain by a group of human thieves on one of his first patrols.

Following Bittlebale's death, Jestin turned to Qybox as his only heir. He begged and pleaded, using every tactic he could to convince Qybox to fill the void of the dead son. But Qybox had been thwarted long ago. His father didn't find him capable of leading before, and he would not get to undo that mistake.

So, out of spite, Qybox took an oath at a small school, Sandstone Spire. He vowed never to lead and only to serve others, as was custom for attendees of the Spire. Sandstone Spire students cannot hold worldly titles or possessions: all gain from your family is foregone in exchange for the knowledge offered as a servant. Here, he learned languages, diplomacy, magic, espionage, herbalism, and alchemy. For each domain, students were rewarded with a ring to signify their mastery.

Years later, Qybox left to further his own studies in enchantment and necromancy, a private mission he dared not discuss with the mentors at Sandstone Spire. He knew Candlekeep would be an excellent place to study. So, he set off for uncharted lands in search of new knowledge to author, as was the customary price to enter Candlekeep. This is what brought him to Sundren.
