Summary

The Sundarian Military is recognized formally as a government investment that is directly responsible for the protection of all claimed territory. They alternatively serve as low level law enforcement in the absence of Judicators and Wardens but all but officers are restricted from executions, banishment and other harsh punishments without permission from an authority.

Origin/History

The Sundren Legion is the official standing army of Mundus himself before his death. They are soldiers taken from the populace, and trained to protect the populace with their very lives.

History of the Fourth Legion

The Fourth Legion was founded sometime in the year 1245 in response to the Veritas dissension and subsequent rebellion. Created by the government only a few years after the death of the legendary founder Mundus, the 4th owes its existence to the efforts of Sevin Veritas, son of Vivin Veritas.

Sevin was a bastard child of the corrupt general who founded the Veritas rebellion. Sevin saw what his father was doing for what it truly was. Determined not to allow the Red Blades to take the brunt of his father's mistake, he gathered former families who did not rebel against Sundren and created the Fourth Legion. It took him many years, but he was able to gather enough support from both the government and his conscripts to create a militia dedicated to stopping the Veritas incursion at any cost.

Aged, but still a powerful fighter in his own right, Sevin allowed the Red Blades to stand down from the walls and took it upon himself to lead a charge up the Veritas walls. He fought his way to his brother Vivir. The battle that took place between the two will be forever remembered by the Fourth as its finest hour, as the brothers dueled at the top of the Veritas mountain hold. They were evenly matched in every way until finally Virin scored a hit on Sevin that left him bleeding out on the ground. Standing victoriously with his blade raised high, Sevin cried out to Tyr, the god of Justice for victory. Sevin’s blade shuddered in his hand before moving with unearthly speed into his brother’s heart. Vivir’s mouth wide open in shock before collapsing.

The Fourth retrieved Sevin and carried him across the no man’s land. Before they could get him to the makeshift fortress, Sevin told them to stop as he raised his great star-metal blade, and threw it into the river nearby. As he died, Sevin told the Fourth to remain powerful and unmoving, like an oak against a storm. He offered his thanks to Tyr, and died with a smile on his face. In the spot where he fell, a sapling grew into a tree of amazing proportions over the years, never falling against the never ending tide of battle. It remains to this day, sheltering any soldier who needs it against the hail of arrows from the Veritas Mountain.

After this fateful stand, the 4th was officially recognized as a Legion in the Sundren army. While it is one of 12 today, it holds a special place as the only legion to be originally formed by non-Legion soldiers.

Base(s) of Operations

There are several well-known Legion bases:

  • Viridale Forest
  • Arbiter's Stand
  • (formerly) Mirakus Post
  • Sundren City

While the Legion is the main force in the valley, a recent addendum to the laws of Sundren allows other forces to take responsibility for the protection of several cities. These forces have been granted trust by the central government, but are still beholden to the Legion whenever an officer of sufficient rank is within city limits. While a Tirones would not have significant influence besides reporting to his superiors, a Sesquiplicarius would be able to exact sufficient obedience from the troops stationed in each.

  • The Thayans are responsible for Aquor.
  • The Corps de Grace are responsible for Sestra.
  • The Red Blades for Mirakus.

However, the Legion maintains a presence in each of these cities, albeit less so than Sundren City or other outposts.

Leadership/People of Note

Imperatu Verinus: This man is the general of all Sundren's Legion forces. He oversees every major operation, and is an intelligent and powerful leader with unquestioned loyalty to the Arbiters.

Evocati Regalis: The Evocati Regalis reports directly to the Imperatu, and is the leader of the special forces team named the Evocati.

Myrios: A Myrios is a leader of a particular Legion. There are twelve in all, and each has their own set of Myrios and Maximus' who head each of the infantry.

The Evocati

The Sundren Legion is led by Imperatu Verinus (Imperatu is his title, Verinus is his name). The Evocati Regalis and the Myrios report to the Imperatu. The Evocati is a separate group from the legions, consisting of 100 of the finest the legions have to offer. Each of the Evocati have a number. The higher the number, the more powerful they are. Instead of the typical longsword/spear and tower shield, they carry a bastard sword and large shield. Evocati are the product of rumors and legends, hardly ever seen, and when they are it's something big.

Jurisdiction

The Legion is the main standing army of the nation of Sundren, and as such, requires a lawful and ordered process when determining jurisdiction in the lands around Sundren City.

The City itself is for the most part, the whole of the nation of Sundren. It is where the Arbiters live and the main focus of the government at all times. The Legion here is split into standing army and the Watch troops. While the Legion normally has a regular army around the vicinity of the City, the Watch is a special police force that handles only the activities of criminals within the city proper.

The Master Watchman is in charge of the police force, and oversees all Watch members activities while also communicating with the Myrios stationed within the city and the Stewards.

As for the nature of the Legion as a whole, and its powers, a Legionnaire's abilities wane the farther he gets from an outpost or town. For example, a Legionnaire would be able to arrest a criminal within the City easily by himself. However, the same Legionnaire would have more of a difficult time doing so within the Viridale because of the lack of back up and support from his fellow soldiers that would exist in the city. A Legionnaire's powers are highly dependent on where he is in relation to his fellows.

Rumors

The Thirteenth Legion

While there are twelve known Legions in the entirety of the legion's forces, there have been rumors of a secret Legion, the 13th. The 13th Legion is Sundren's special operations force. While their existence is known, their membership is not. They take on the dirty, but essential tasks that the government or Legion needs accomplished: assassinations, torture, and the like.

The 13th Legion is spoken of with a mixture of awe and respect. Some say they are a myth, a bogey man used to scare away Sundrens enemies, both foreign and domestic. Others say they are corrupt, nicknaming them the "Black Legion." These masked legionaries strike without warning, without compassion, and without mercy. Few who see the dark armor of this 13th Legion never live to tell the story.
