John was born on the road. His father, a travelling entertainer called Shamus, never told John who his real mother was or where he was born. Many say the travelling life is unsuitable for raising children but John received a fine education from his father in both singing and story-telling and there was never a dull moment on the road.
Although his father was a very friendly man it was clear that there were secrets he chose not to share with his son. Often when they were in the bigger cities his father would disappear for great lengths of time and refuse to answer questions when he returned. Sadly one night he did not return and soon word began to spread that an entertainer’s body had been found in the markets. The poor man had apparently been murdered by the thieves’ guild for walking in on one of their meetings by accident. This of course did little to help the grief John felt. At the ceremony provided by the followers of Ilmater he was approached by a man in a plain black cloak. Expressing sympathy over John’s loss, the man claimed to be his father’s lawyer. A pouch of gold and a letter from his father was all that remained. As the lawyer shook hands with John he noticed an unusual ring, a silver harp surrounded by stars. The letter from his father simply said how much he loved him and was sorry ‘Things had to be this way’ and that ‘one day he would understand’. Now John has come to Sundren believing it to be his father’s birthplace and hopefully where he can find some answers.

<li>Shamus O’Reilly – John’s now deceased father. Taught John almost everything he knew. It can be assumed Shamus was a Harper Scout although it appears his son was, and still is, unaware.</li>

<li>Daniel Maske – Daniel was John’s surrogate brother when he was growing up. Daniel travelled with Shamus for most of John’s early life. His current whereabouts are unknown. It can also be assumed that he was a Harper working with Shamus.</li>
